A Hero in my eyes

What is a hero? A hero in my eyes is a person you look up to in life, someone you want to be like when you get older, your idol, someone who is your biggest fan.

I've had a lot of fans throughout my life and even today I still do, but if I had to define a hero for me I would have to say a hero is a mother raising her daughter to be the best she can be no matter what circumstances.

My mom has done what most mothers do; she gave me life, taught me right from wrong and raised me to be a decent human being. She taught me to see myself as God sees me and to look past what is physically visible to everyone's eyes.

I might be in a wheelchair but that doesn't make me any less of a person. It might take me longer to do things or to catch on to things, but I can still do them. I struggle with things but that is not an excuse to give up or not try. I have my bad days but I can't stop living life when things don't go my way, I need to fight through the bad days know better days are just ahead of me.

Raising me was no easy task; my life came with a lot of complications, many ups and downs and a long road ahead with a future that wasn't promised. Life started out as a roller coaster I guess you could say, my mom was handed a life that no mother would ever bargain for, a life raising a special needs child. But even with the hand God had given her she has never once left my side. No matter what I had to deal with I always had the security of knowing that I didn't have to do it alone. We are a package deal she's always said and we handle things together.

When I was too young to defend my rights, my mom was my voice. When I was upset after a bad day in this sometimes cruel world, she is there to comfort me with open arms and a listening ear. If I need advice she'll give it without question. If I am headed in the wrong direction she'll show me without judgement. When I am lost and confused she is the light to open my eyes from the darkness I see ahead of me.

A hero can be anybody, a teacher, a coach, a famous singer, a movie star, a grandma, a grandpa, aunt, uncle or a cousin. We are all just ordinary people in this world but even the most ordinary person can lead the most extraordinary life and become a hero to the world around them. We all have the potential to turn a small light on in a dark room and turn a life around for the better. The light that shines through for me just happens to be a mother who has never given up on her child and loves her unconditionally.

I am eternally grateful to have such a loving mother.
